12/17/2023 0 Comments Keypad for ipad![]() Yes, it sounds corny but for some reason, Apple has made the experience of using an iPad incredibly convenient and effortless. The real reason why you are getting an iPad is that special something you get from using it. Considering it can’t replace them at that high of a price, I think you’re better off buying a cheaper MacBook or PC. Now, don’t get me wrong I think iPad OS is great for the iPad but I just don’t think that it could replace Windows or Mac OS. You could even argue that the Surface tablets are a better deal as they give you access to a full version of Windows instead of the arguably worse iPad OS. That’s less than half of what Apple charges and except for the extra USB-C input they both have the same features. Microsoft seriously undercut Apple in pricing as the keyboard covers for their Surface tablets start at just $129. That’s a lot more than you’d spend on the MacBook Air that comes in at just $999 and has two USB-C ports, a full physical keyboard and trackpad included in that price. If you want the standard 13 inch laptop experience you’re spending a total of $1,348. This is particularly high as you’re already spending $799 on the 11 inch and $999 on the 12.9 inch iPad Pro. OverpricedĪnother problem I have with the Magic Keyboard is the high price tag of $299 for the 11 inch and $349 for the 12.9 inch model. For me using the Magic Keyboard was a gimmick and never came naturally. In that case, I may as well have just gotten my laptop and actually gotten it done faster. It’s also very awkward to have the keyboard-cover lying around empty when you want to use the iPad for something else and I found myself needing a reminder to get the keyboard whenever I needed to type for a longer time. But I soon realized that when I was typing on the iPad it’s never long enough to actually require a full physical keyboard. At first, I wanted to adapt to the keyboard and only use it when I needed to type. Adjusting to iPad OS isn’t hard at all but there’s also no real benefit when you’re just working. I love my MacBook Pro and I work very fast on it. But for me at least, it felt more and more like I simply had a second, slightly dumber laptop. In fairness, not everyone already has a main computer and are looking to the iPad Pro (+ Magic Keyboard) as their only portable device. In fact, I was basically using my iPad and my MacBook in the exact same way. Slowly, my iPad becomes a slightly dumber version of the laptop I already have. The ultimate reason why I decided to return my Magic Keyboard was that once I got used to the new keyboard I hardly ever went back to using my iPad like I used to. I’m the first to say that the iPad is a great purchase and an amazing device but I don’t think it can or ever should replace your laptop. No matter how good the hinge and keyboard are, it’s still not as good as a laptop. But in my opinion that is the exact problem with it because the Magic Keyboard will only ever get you so close to the real laptop experience. So from what I understand, you’re buying the accessory to transform your iPad into a laptop. With the trackpad and keyboard, your iPad now clicks in effortlessly thanks to the many magnets in the case, ready for you to use just like a laptop. The keyboard also allows you to use many keyboard shortcuts and the trackpad works with iPad OS’s cursor which has special animations and appearances based on what you’re clicking. On top of that, you get the closest thing to the laptop experience with its hinge mechanism that levitates the tablet above the keyboard and lets you adjust the angle of your screen just like you would on any laptop. So what do you actually get for your hard-earned money? The Magic Keyboard comes with a full-sized backlit keyboard and trackpad as well as an extra USB-C input.
